Superb antique English silver-plated butter dish manufactured by the renowned Sheffield firm Martin, Hall & Co. This piece features a neoclassical pierced oval body and a domed cover surmounted by a realistically modeled recumbent cow finial.
Stamped with the maker's mark MH & Co EPNS.
Date: Circa 1865
Design: Intricate reticulated pierced walls, beaded rims, and a domed lid with foliate engraving.
Dimensions: Approximately 9" W x 6" H (21 cm x 15 cm).
Condition: Excellent coverage with no "bleeding" to the base metal.
Structural: The pierced openwork is intact with no breaks. The cow finial is original and firmly attached.
A lead crystal glass liner will be supplied for your convenience, could be replaced by any insert sized about 13.5 by 8 cm.
Historical Context: Martin, Hall & Co. was a celebrated manufacturer that exhibited at major world fairs, including the 1851 Great Exhibition and the 1862 International Exhibition. They were noted for the superior quality of their hollowware and electroplated tableware.
