Magnificent English Antique Silver plate Teapot dating to Victorian era
This stunningly beautiful silver plated demi fluted teapot has extensive detailing and decoration around the edge. The lid is hinged with a fluted ridded dome and ebonised wood finial. The spout is long swan neck and what looks and feels like ebonised wood handle.
Dimensions: 11 1/2 inches or just under 30 cm across at the widest and 6 inches or 15 cm tall, the weight is about 875 grams. This is a very large substantial teapot.
Of note is extensive loss of plating on both sides due to a century of arduous cleaning - exposing dark grey base metal (see the photos), but the tea pot is still amazingly shiny. There are no knocks or dents, the inside is surprisingly clean and ready to use. This is a top quality antique tea pot, created with great attention to detail - the spot between the spout and the internal body is equipped with an in-built metal membrane to prevent the tea leaves from going into the cup.
The mark is for the firm JR & S, established by John Round in Sheffield in 1847. The mark on the underside states JR & S under a logo of four tridents in a circle and a model number underneath. This allows us to date this amazing piece precisely to about 1886-1895 as in 1886 the business became amalgamated with Ridge, Allcard & Co, and John Ridge became the manager. In this period the JR & S mark was often accompanied by the "four tridents" trade mark, previously used by Joseph Ridge, as we see in the mark on the underside of this tea pot.
This is a handsome substantial antique English piece, great for use or display.
