A provincial Arts & Crafts child’s ladder-back chair originating from Lancashire, dating to the late 19th or early 20th century (circa 1895–1915).
Constructed in elm, the chair features three gently shaped ladder slats, cylindrical uprights with restrained turning, and hand-turned stretchers. The seat retains its original woven rush, tightly executed and well preserved. The overall form reflects the Arts & Crafts movement’s emphasis on utility, proportion, and honest materials, typical of North-West English workshop production.
The reduced scale indicates it was made as a child’s chair. Today it functions equally well as a decorative or occasional piece, with strong sculptural presence and original surface throughout.
Unrestored, retaining its original finish and patina.
