Oval oak and silver plate ships style gallery tray with a ball and rail gallery frame a central oval empty cartouche and silver plated Art Nouveau scroll handles. Quarter sawn dark oak, four bun feet.
Signed on the bottom HW in a shield and EPNS in gothic font, circa 1890.
Dimensions: about 17 inches wide including the handles, 12 inches wide, 3 inches tall including the bun feet.
Condition:
There is a shrinkage split running along the length of the side of the oak base. This is a natural result of historical wood contraction. The split is completely stable, does not move or flex when the tray is lifted, and does not compromise the structural integrity of the piece.
The silver-plated spindle-style "ball and rail" gallery is structurally straight and uniformly aligned without major dents or bends. There is loss of plating to the central cartouche but very little to none thinning of the silver plate along the top curved rail of the gallery. Both handles and gallery posts are tightly secured to the timber base. Mild tarnish and oxidation are present around the joints and underneath the bun feet.
