Elegant and rare, antique larger size Thomas Wilkinson silver plate Breakfast Cruet for Six Eggs.
The set contains a base tray with six indentations in the base tray to place eggs, six goblet-shaped cups and six old fiddle spoons, suspended from the rack at the top of the post in the centre. The handle has a loop shape, the tray rests on three ball feet. Each goblet securely sits on a raised small pole which fits inside its base, and can be taken of it to be placed on the table. The goblets are decorated with miniature bead pattern on the rim to match the pattern on their stem and base. The tray has a wavy fluted rim.
The reverse of the spoons shows the maker’s mark “TW&S” with a pelican for Thomas Wilkinson with Pelican Works mark, dating it to about 1875-1880.
Background: THOMAS WILKINSON & SONS, Birmingham was founded by Thomas Wilkinson in 1832. It was active at Pelican Works with the trade mark ‘Pelican Ware’.
Condition report: one spoon is a very close replacement by D&E from the same period, one goblet has a small (0.4 cm) scratch on the side, some bolts on the reverse of the base have been replaced, some loss of plating and marks inside the egg cups and around the tray, all shown in the photos, age consistent scratches and signs of use - overall very good antique condition.
Approximate Measurements: about 8 inches or 20 high, and 8 inches and about 20 cm in diameter. The height of the goblets are 3 inches, the diameter is 2 inches or 5 cm. The length of the spoons are about 5 inches or 12.5 cm.
I send by Royal Mail "signed". The central post of the cruet will be unscrewed to fit into the postage box - it can be easily slotted back and attached to the tray with one screw (supplied).
