Cessationist Arts and Crafts Prince’s Plate silver-plated coffee pot or hot water jug by Mappin & Webb, dating to circa 1885–1895.
The body is fully hand-beaten, with visible hammer marks throughout. Decoration consists of hand-raised Art Nouveau style repoussé trefoil motifs, deliberately spaced to leave large areas of hammered surface exposed. This restrained use of ornament is characteristic of Arts & Crafts and Tudor Revival metalwork, where surface texture and craftsmanship were prioritised.
The jug has a lidded neck for heat retention, stands on three stylised feet, and is fitted with an ebonised insulating handle with silver mounts, allowing safe handling when filled with hot water. Produced under the Prince’s Plate line, Mappin & Webb’s higher-grade silver plate intended to rival contemporary hand-worked sterling. Marked accordingly to the underside.
Condition: Very good antique condition. Light surface wear consistent with age, ex on top of trefoil decor, mini knocks and scratches. No repairs or splits noted.
